LORD

Lord, sometimes i feel overwhelmed by the problems and pressures of this world. Help me to instead focus on You and the plan You  have for me. I pray that You help me stand secure in my faith and proclaim myself to be a conqueror - victorious in every of life.

THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

“I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”
-Philippians 4:13

He rowed alone across the Pacific Ocean 8,990 miles but fell short of his goal 33 miles away. Peter Bird attempted to become the first man to single-handedly row from San Francisco, USA across the Pacific. He almost succeeded, but approaching the east coast of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Bird encountered stormy weather and choppy seas. He was within one nautical mile of the great reef when he had to radio for help from Royal Australian Navy.

Though most of us wound never dare to attempt what Peter Bird did, we have a profound admiration for someone who would pit his life against such odds. To succeed in crossing almost 9,000 miles of ocean and yet to fall short of the goal by a mere 33 miles is rather sad – so close to the finish and then end in failure.

In the New Testament, some believers were considering giving up. The pressure was too great. The antagonism was too sharp; thus, the writer of the book of Hebrews encouraged struggling believers to get their eyes on the Lord – not on circumstances – but to look to Jesus as the Author and Finisher and the One who completes our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Maybe you have come a long, long way in your Christian walk, but you are discouraged and feel like giving up. Hang in there, there is help coming. Peter Bird did make it to Australia, but he had to have the assistance of the Australian Navy, and to reach your destination on Heaven’s shore may require that you let someone else give you a hand.

THE CHEMISTRY OF LOVE

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.”
-1 Corinthians 13:4

Dr. Karl Menninger, one of our day’s most prominent psychiatrist, has said, “Love is the medicine for our sick old world.” His staff was often told that love was the most powerful thing they could give to their patients.

Scientists have been analyzing love in the laboratory recently. They have learned that love produces changes in body chemistry. When a male meets a female, the blood level of an amino acid, phenylalanine, leaps to a high equaled only by devouring a pound of chocolate. “People in the throes of love,” says researcher Cathy Lawhon, “call it magic but human behaviorists attempt to define it scientifically. Theories of how chemistry works range from the biochemical effects or raised phenylalanine levels in the blood during love relationships to synchronous and harmonious personal interaction styles.”

More than 19 centuries ago, in the city of ancient Ephesus, a learned rabbi, turned missionary-preacher by the name of Paul, analyzed the chemistry of love. He mentioned a variety of ingredients which make up the real thing: patience, truthfulness, sacrifice, service, etc.

Lets recall 1 Corinthians 13:1-3, “If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries, and all knowledge; and if I  have all faith, so as to remove mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.”

RESPONSE TO TRIALS

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
-Romans 8:28

One of the strange things about trials is this: when they knock at our door or sneak through the back door, we never quit expect them. When we battle with them, we feel that nobody else has ever faced the same intensity of testing.

The Greek word translated testing has two meanings: (1) A trial which comes from without, and (2) A temptation or solicitation to do wrong which comes from within.

Long ago, Paul warned against presumptuousness – thinking that you are immune from trials. He also assured us that when we face periods of difficulty, God will take us through. You find those words of counsel in 1 Corinthians 10:12-13, “So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall. No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”

Throughout the New Testament, you will find a common theme: Periods of testing come to all of God’s children. The only question is when and what kind. Trials neither indicate that you have been abandoned by God, or selected for an attack from Satan. Trials are the result of living in a broken world, a world which is hostile to the values of God’s children.

HANDICAP

“Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”
-Psalm 103:2

You may have read it yourself – about 18 year old Paul Whittaker who entered Oxford University where he will study for a music degree. Whittaker though, is different from most college students. He is totally deaf since birth, yet he has served as Church organist and choirmaster and will absorb lectures by reading lips.

Dr.Adeline Becht is also a woman who should never have succeeded. As she marched to the speaker’s podium to receive her doctorate in clinical and counseling psychology, thousand of well-wishers at the University of Oregon stood on their feet and cheered.

She had become separated from her parents at age 14 and spent most of her youth in juvenile homes, where she was introduced to drugs and heroin which eventually damaged her sight. To support her drug habit, Becht turned to street crime. Eventually she kicked the drug habit but become an alcoholic. In 1969, she was declared legally blind. All of this is behind her now.

There are others – Helen Keller who was deaf and blind; Thomas Edison who lost his hearing at age 12; Fanny Crosby who was blind most of her life and became one of Christianity’s greatest songwriters; Joni Eareckson, the paraplegic young woman whose ministry has blessed thousands. Now, all of them could have just quit, given up, and vegetated – but they didn’t.

The greatest handicaps are not those that impair hearing or speech. The great handicaps are those of the spirit and soul that keep God from working in your life. Think about it.

JAIME GABAO

Dear James,
On your own you are complete. You are a living, breathing being. You can climb mountains and stand up to demons. You can praise and worship God with your humble heart and you can sing and shout and laugh and bless the people around you with your smile.

It really drives me insane that I don’t know how people feel about me. Like am I nice? Am I funny? Am I mean? Am I rude? Am I obnoxious? Am I dumb? What am i?

“Whenever you give a woman, she’s going to multiply. If you give her sperm, she’ll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she’ll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she’ll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she’ll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her. So if you give her any crap, you will receive tons of shit.”

Every long lost dream lead me to where you are. Others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars pointing me on my way into your loving arms. This much I know is true that God blessed the broken road that led me straight to you.

For every woman who didn’t fight for you, didn’t stay with you, didn’t give you the entirety of her heart, couldn’t love you how you deserve to be loved – I will give you all of me. And I will stay.
