ACCEPTING OURSELVES

“Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought,… but with sober judgment.” Romans 12:3

C.S. Lewis, the brilliant former professor of Medieval English, who was once described as the apostle to the agnostic,” wrote that when errors come into the world, they come in pairs. If you stop and think about it, you will probably agree. Think of yourself more highly than you ought to and we say you are stuck on yourself – full of pride, arrogant, and haughty. Conversely, if you constantly belittle yourself, your self-image crumbles and you begin to crawl into your shell. The problem is not new.

A great release of the soul comes when you can bring your feelings to God, and learn that He accepts you on the basis of what Christ did at Calvary. The Bible says that God has made us accepted in the Beloved who is Christ (Ephesians 1:6). When He accepts us, as we become His children through faith, we then enter into a new relationship with Him. God has a plan for our lives, and what happens is the outworking of His plan. It is when we refuse to believe this that we are uptight. This is why Paul wrote, “for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am” (Philippians 4:11).

At the same time, do not think that you are worthless and no good to anyone. Think of it like this: God forgave us, so we can forgive ourselves; God loves us, so we can love ourselves; God cares for us so we can trust Him to work His will in our lives. Neither pride nor feelings of inferiority produce the kind of men and women who are happy and purposeful in life; but learning to accept the circumstances of life and trusting God to work His will through them is the key to turning the reins over to God. Then we can take down the armor and stop defending ourselves.

RUNNING THE RACE PATIENTLY

Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
Hebrews 12:1

Races have a certain hype or excitement to them. One of the metaphors on the Christian life found throughout the New Testament is that of the distance runner running the great race of life. The writer of Hebrews likens the Christian to the athlete who enters the vast colosseum in a race. But instead of a colosseum filled with noisy spectators as a believer, you are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses – men and women who have run the race down the centuries – who are there to cheer you on.

The writer gives some practical advice by saying, “let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles..” (Hebrews 12:1). He says two things hinder your Christian walk: one is weight, which hinders your progress; the other sin. Both are to be put aside. Some things are not wrong in themselves, but they become wrong when our priorities give them an edge over our God and our families.

The second advice is, “Let us run with perseverance, the race marked out for us” (12:1). It means, “Don’t give up! Pace yourself.” There’s another interesting thought here. You don’t choose the pathway. It’s done for you. Before you were born, God knew exactly the path that you would be required to run so nothing in your life comes as a surprise to Him.

The third, “Let us..” deals with perspective and motivation. He says, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”

Looking back will always get you into trouble. It’s the upward look that counts. Note of Hebrews 12, and apply those three guidelines to your life today. It can make a real difference.

PRAYING WHEN LIFE UNRAVELS

“Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24

How do you pray when your world is falling apart? Do you stop praying and conclude that God has ignored you? Many people have given up on God because they prayed for something and it didn’t happen. Have you who are Christian leaders failed to make what the Bible says about Prayer clear enough?

In this book Too Busy Not To Pray, Bill Hybels passes on a formula explaining why some prayers are unanswered. He say, “If the request is wrong, God says, “No.” if the timing is wrong, God says, “Slow.” If you are wrong, God says, “Grow”, but if the request is right, the timing is right and you are right, God says, “Go!”

God does hear and answer the faintest plea of His child, but the answers are far deeper than our human understanding. Simply put, God answers us in four ways.
1.Some answers are direct. The request and the answer move along parallel channels. That’s the way we like prayer. We ask and immediately receive what we’ve asked for.
2.Some answers are delayed. Here it is a matter of timing, and God answers us on His timetable, not ours.
3.Some answers are disguised. We asked God for something and then later, look back and recognize how God answered – His answer was different from our request. We see here how much better was His answer.
4.Finally, some answers are denied. He loves you too much to give you everything that you ask for. I’ve lived long enough to be able to look back and to say, “Thank You Father that You said, “No” to some of my requests.” Father does know best, and you can trust Him for the best in your life.”

KATULAD MO

HOW IS YOUR SERVE

Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.
Mark 10:43-44

Anyone who has played tennis knows that the game commences with the serve. Unless a serve lands across the net in the service court the game doesn’t continue.

That’s the lesson about the Christian life Jesus tried to get across to the disciples in the Upper Room before He faced the Cross. Passover – an important event to the Jew. In the first century most of the roads were unpaved, so when people walked their feet became dusty and dirty. When a guest entered a house, a mark of hospitality would be to have a servant bring a basin and water and to wash disciples entered no one extended that act of service.

Rising from the table of Jesus took a towel and began the lowly task of washing the disciples’ feet. He said, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even to Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:43-45).

GOD HAS A PLAN

For I know the plans I have for you… plans to prosper you… to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:10, 11

God has a plan, but chance has no part in it. Take, for example, planet Earth – this sphere spinning on its axis 1,000 miles per hour, and hurtling through space at 27,000 miles per hour. If our planet were closer to the sun, we could not stand the heat. If we were further away, we could not stand the cold. Our bodies thrive in the atmosphere consisting of 80% percent nitrogen and 20% percent oxygen. With less oxygen we would eventually burn out. Then the 23 ½ degree tilt of the earth on the axis gives the four seasons, breaking the monotony of a climate with no change.

Understanding God’s plan for nature, helps me to accept that He has a plan for my life as well. You might be thinking, “You do not know how messed up my life is right now!” and your heart cries out, “How could God possibly have a plan for my life?”

You may have heard this before, “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity!” What you may see as chaos, God views as an opportunity.

You are of infinitely more value than the vastness of space which still reveals a plan and a purpose. You, my friend, are of greater value than the hosts of heaven.

Are you discouraged? Then listen to the still voice of God saying, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:10,11) and then put yourself in the centre of that plan.

DON’T WASTE THE SUFFERING

“Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”
Hebrews 13:5

In his book, “Why Us?”, Warren Wiersbe tells of visiting a friend whose world had come apart. Her husband had gone blind and then her health failed. She has to remain at home caring for her husband when she herself needs care.

In a conversation with her, she told Wiersbe, “Pray that I won’t waste all this suffering.” What a remarkable person.

That dear woman had already come to understand something which many people never grasp – suffering is an investment which God makes in our life because He trusts us enough to allow us to face the dark hours of the soul.

Can suffering be wasted? Yes, of course! Job’s wife even suggested that he curse God and die! What a waste! Most people profit little from the investment of suffering, yet others capitalize on it and receive great gain.

A man injured in a sports accident, which confined him to a sickbed, wrote, “Friends who come to visit ask why I am so cheerful.. I can’t see any reason for being sad. I might not be happy that I have to be in bed, but I have a deep joy that even I marvel about. I know and love the God who loves and cares for me and shows it.”

When we pray about needs, we almost always pray to be delivered from the pain of suffering, from the loneliness of estrangement, from the vale of bereavement, yet when we walk through the dark night, we sense the presence of Him who said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you!”

When you face the hour of trouble, pray, “God, grant that this will not be wasted in my life. Give me a teachable spirit and stay close to me that the investment of Your presence will not be lost.” Suffering can bring great gain!

DISCOURAGEMENT

“Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Have you experienced starting something, pouring your body and soul into a cause – and then begin to wonder whether it was worth the time and effort? We describe it as discouragement.” Webster defines it as “that which causes one to weaken.”

Discouragement is a prelude to one of the most devastating of all maladies, known as “quit-it is.” If you can recognize the symptoms of this malady, then you can do something about it.

Notice, first of all, that discouragement almost always comes when you are physically fatigued.

Years ago, a fiery prophet named Elijah met the prophets of Baal and thundered forth the judgment of God. He won single-handedly, but became physically tired. As a result, he turned and ran to the wilderness of Horeb. Discouragement turned to quit-it is as he declared, “Lord, just let me die. I am no better than the prophets before me.”

Secondly, notice the discouragement is extremely contagious. Charles Jones, is a very successful businessman. He has sold more insurance in a few years than many men sell in a lifetime. When asked if he ever gets discouraged, Jones replied, “Sure, I do, but I can’t afford to let you know – we’ll just discouraged each other.”

Thirdly, discouragement is an enemy which does battle with faith. Martin Luther defined faith as “a lively, reckless confidence in God.” Faith says, “I can visualize what I want to accomplish, or I am willing to trust God for…” Discouragement out, “It is not worth it.”

CONVERSION

I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
John 12:46

For some people there is a point of conversion but Stanislav Levchenko’s was spread out years. It began when he was assigned by the Russian KGB, to take visitors to the cultural centers of Russia. Stanislav was the son of a military man, and communism had been his god.

As Levechenko took people to the cathedrals, he began to have second thought about what he had been taught. He said, “In the beginning I saw only the physical beauty of these places. But gradually, I started to experience something deeper. I’d watch the faces of those who had come in to pray. Sometimes their faces would be anguished and scared but once they had prayed, they looked serene, even happy. It was a phenomenon I never tired of watching.

Slowly Levchenko began to ponder about life and reached out to God. He became a secret believer.

“I had no idea at all how to pray,” he wrote in his book, On the Wrong Side. So he composed letters to God beginning, “Dear Sir!” but I could feel that someone was reading my mail, and I was comforted.

“My faith,” he later wrote, “was sometimes all that kept me sane..” Levchenko finally became so disenchanted with his life’s work that he defected to the United States and declared his faith.

Levchenko was tried in Absentia, condemned to death by the Soviet government and was hunted by the ruthless KGB agents who were once his comrades.

Today Levchenko is a freeman who lives in the shadows of death. Yet he would tell you that he had never been more free. Jesus put it right: “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32).

UNCHANGING LOVE

Habang tumatagal, mas marami akong natututuhan sa’yo at sa relasyon natin. Habang tumatagal, dumadalang yung “I Love You”, “Miss na Kita” at marami pang iba.

MY LOVE DO NOT GIVE UP ON ME

MY LOVE DO NOT GIVE UP ON ME

I easily get insecure. I do not have that many skills and talents. I am not good at cooking or even at making a great blend of coffee. I have various weaknesses and quirks which can turn people off. So if you really love me, you have to face every part of me. I do not want you to just overlook them. I do not want you to love me blindly. I want you to stare straight at them, accept them, and understand that I am made of those imperfections. But as you accept them, I hope you also encourage me to be a better person. Maybe not directly but in a way where I get motivated to improve myself because of the love you show me. I hope that you are willing to help me conquer every weakness I possess. I hope that we build something where we thrive together, because a love that’s genuine kills the fear of stepping out of our comfort zones.

Love,
Yhang.

MY LOVE DO NOT GIVE UP ON ME

Loving me who is gotten used to being alone is very challenging. I am strong but also vulnerable. I am happy but also stressed out. I am easy to understand but also complicated as hell at times. Whatever you do, never ever make me feel alone. I may have gotten used to being all alone but in all honesty, I would rather have you by my side.

Love,
Yhang.
