“A friend loves at all times.”
-Proverbs 17:17
Have you ever had the feeling that
you ought to pick up the phone and call someone, or drop by for a visit, but
then someone interrupted you, or your phone rang?
Charles Hanson Towne knew something
of this when he wrote the following poem:
Around the corner I have a friend,
In this city that has no end;
Yet day’s go by, and weeks rush on,
And before I know it a year has gone,
And I never see my old friend’s face,
For life is a swift and terrible
race.
He knows I like him just as well
As in the days when I rang his bell
And rang mine.
We were younger then
And now we are busy, tired men:
Tired with playing a foolish game,
Tired with trying to make a name,
“Tomorrow,” I say, “I will call on
Jim,”
Just to show that I am thinking of
him.
But tomorrow comes – and tomorrow
goes,
And the distance between us grows and
grows
Around the corner, but miles away..
“Here’s a telegram, Jim died today.”
And that’s what we get, and deserve
in the end:
Around the corner, a lost friend.
Your life will be a great deal more
cheerful if you take advantage of the opportunity to say, “Thank You,” or “I
Love You,” or “I Appreciate what you have done.” Never make the mistake of
thinking that he knows, or she knows. Tell him. Tell her.
