Whoever wants to become great among
you must be your servant, whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.
Mark 10:43-44
Anyone who has played tennis knows
that the game commences with the serve. Unless a serve lands across the net in
the service court the game doesn’t continue.
That’s the lesson about the Christian
life Jesus tried to get across to the disciples in the Upper Room before He
faced the Cross. Passover – an important event to the Jew. In the first century
most of the roads were unpaved, so when people walked their feet became dusty
and dirty. When a guest entered a house, a mark of hospitality would be to have
a servant bring a basin and water and to wash disciples entered no one extended
that act of service.
Rising from the table of Jesus took a
towel and began the lowly task of washing the disciples’ feet. He said,
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever
wants to be first must be slave of all. For even to Son of Man did not come to
be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark
10:43-45).
