Does your work require you to sit on
your desk and work on your computer daily? If it does, chances are, you may be
experiencing symptoms like joint stiffness and swelling. Making some
adjustments in the way you work, however, can help you deal with the pain and
prevent it from getting worse. Here are some things you can do at work:
1.Be very mindful of your posture. Sit straight, relax, but do not slouch your back. Make
sure your head and neck are directly above your shoulders and do not lean
forward. This position will ease the pain you feel on your mid and lower back.
Your computer monitor should be about an arm’s length away from your body, and
should be two to three inches above eye level. This is done to prevent eye and
neck strain. Where you place your mouse is important too! Place it near your
keyboard so you will not over extend your shoulder and arms when you click.
Make sure your feet are flat on the floor and shoulder-width apart. This will
release the tension on your ankles and knees. It also keeps the spine straight.
Avoid crossing your legs too. Sitting with your legs crossed makes it difficult
for you to keep your spine and shoulders straight. You also have a risk of
overstretching the muscles around the pelvis.
2.Move around. Doing
simple exercises on your desk can reduce stress and pain. Try doing shoulder
rolls, arm stretches, finger extension exercise and leg hug of bend to help
reduce the pressure on your spine, arms, and hips. You can also try getting up
to stretch your arms and legs. Do so by going on a bathroom break or getting a
glass of water. Moving around will promote circulation and alertness. Breathing
exercises also helps raise vital energy and engages your core that supports the
upper body.
3.Be smart about your movements. Yes, moving around is important for the joints but making a
wrong move could increase your chances of having arthritis pain. Lifting heavy
objects are sometimes unavoidable at work so research on how to carry objects
properly. Organize your work desk as well so you wouldn’t have to reach your
most-used things really far.
Having the proper posture, doing
simple exercises in intervals, and not stressing your joints too much can
greatly help you manage work-related pain and even prevent you from
experiencing arthritis pain. But if these still don’t work, consult a doctor
and do whatever you need and more without the pain.
